Did you get my love letter?

I have been pondering over this question for a while now. I have always been a big fan of letters (real ones, on real paper delivered by real pigeons post); moreover, I believe I am a word-person. I'm too logical for hidden meanings and I tend to over-think stuff, so I believe in words - well, if you say something aloud, it's at least ( Read more... )

There is still room for old-time romance ext_1090722 March 7 2012, 21:18:00 UTC
I agree, the way we communicate is different.. but first of all, human emotions hasn't changed. And for all the beautiful things that we can linger on, from our history, there's probably a lot of cases of people being insensitive, rude, disgusting, and all that.. Only that didn't really survive in most of our "romantic" recollections. Only sometimes you read "vulgar" poetry or very early forms of "erotic humor" and you realize, we've also always been .. well, human, with the clean and dirty bits, the beautiful and the ugly.

Personally, I've had an incredible experience as I was waiting for a girl's emails just as you would await a pigeon. Or a letter. She was a slow typer AND she didn't really use the computer much. No facebook. Yes, so as far as I'm concerned that was the middle ages. And I was dying of thirst to read from her :)

Frankie, you're right, there have always been rude and insensitive cases. Even Henry VIII beheaded Anne in the end, but first he wrote a bunch of unbelievably beautiful letters :)
What would you say is nowadays an appropriate alternative to romantic correspondence of 1500s? We still need the same feelings of "dying of thirst" to read from someone (you almost quoted Napoleon there actually :), right? Slow typers with no Facebook are a rare find these days, which is a pity...
