Hey, this journal still exists!  I can post to it!  LJ has gotten savvy to, you know, mobile devices, and I stand a chance of posting this without my head exploding (even from a desktop machine).  So hello, journal, from the far side of the LJ Lull.  No services have yet replaced you ( Read more... )

Oh, did 5th get rid of the bit of 4th where everyone coukd basically do everything? I am change averse but my main complaint going to 3rd was movement complexity (more than balanced by lack of thac0) and to 4th my complaint was badically *everything* I'd totally check out 5th if I had a DM. Maybe some day...

Hm, I'm still getting used to the new LJ format, and when/how to stay up on it. Sorry for the slow reply, and I'm glad to see someone's still here.

Yes, I think 5th fixed many things about 4th, that included. Honestly, 5th feels more like a combination of 2nd and 3rd to me than anything to do with 4th. I think it's retained the complexity of movement from 3rd, partly because it's kept a fair bit of the tactical side of the game ... if you want it. I felt that 4th was a tabletop tactics game themed around D&D. Many classes and powers became useless if you weren't playing on a grid and focusing on combat all the time.

In our current game, we're only on a grid during large, complex, set-piece combats., and often we start out off-grid and only go on the grid if we really have something we want to do that is going to require the precision - otherwise we just narrate. I really like it.
