Just tell me I'm not going to need to do this for the rest of my life.

Don't be such an alarmist. We are merely ensuring you have a rest of your life.

Obviously, you needn't behave this way in the future. The entire intent of this is to send a clear message: you are my wife and equal, my home is your home, and I will not tolerate treatment of you as anything less. We are putting on a show, and I assure you: he will be watching.

Seven bodyguards and a treatise on how to behalf with someone I've already met and you're calling me an alarmist?

I know he'll be watching, and I'm willing to do this because he's your friend. I just want to make certain I'm not going to be playing Slytherin politics every time I run into him after this.

In case you've not noticed, love, I'm a bit rubbish at politics.

Touché.

Lucius will be my friend whether you do this or not, Martha. This is as much for your benefit as mine. For our benefit, if you will. You do not wish to endure these intrigues; neither do I wish to feel obliged to protect you from him or see him treat you abhorrently. It should not be necessary. His combined respect for me and for the idea of family outstrips his party politics, or will, in time.

As you know.

I am ascertaining his intentions and expressing to him where my loyalties lie without driving him away entirely, but I am also giving you the tools you need to deal with him.
