A question to the Aussies on my flist, has anyone been diving/snorkeling on the Barrier? Any suggestion on the best place or companies to go with?

I lived/worked on Heron Island for a while - can't think of a better place to see the Reef - you just walk onto it right off the beach.

Not a day trip place though, overnight only.

Heron Island? Is that just off the coast from Rockhampton?
A lot of people have been telling me to go to Lady Musgrave or Lady Elliot, honestly I'm completely confused. Never been snorkelling or diving.

Any idea on how much a chater would cost to Heron Island?

The resort runs a big double hulled catamaran out there for guests, and there used to be a helicopter as well. I was actually working for the uNiversity of Qld at the Research Centre, so I don't know too much about the tourist side of things.
