[Or all the pain those people have inflicted upon her. It's probably true, there is no central node where something unquestionably her is waiting. The thought does not feel good and she goes to find a place to sit down, arms wrapping around herself quietly.]

[The move down from the mountain wasn't complete yet, but the twins are taking the transition well enough, and Dominique has taken the time away from them to search for her reason to return. But her husband (ex, he'd said) didn't know where she was and Dominique has very little to go on to find her further than that.

The hope she'd experienced, on realising she could maybe finally return, has been choking and waning under the weight of it, that Jackie could be anywhere, that Dominique might never see her again.

It's painful, to stumble across her so randomly, by chance alone and nothing more. The flood of emotion is strong, multi-faceted, and she has to stop and gather herself in before she can even think about approaching.]

[Chance has a poor sense of humor. Jackie doesn't look up from her little huddle on the picnic table, telling herself very firmly not to resent herself for the pain she feels and hating every moment of it. She's meant to be accepting her feelings, if Darren were here he would remind her not to be embarrassed to cry, but she is and she does not want to ( ... )

[She has never seen Jackie cry. Even in the moments where the woman felt like she would shatter into pieces under Dominique's hands, she hadn't cried. It leaves Dominique even more uncertain, as she watches. Sixteen years was a long time, foolhardy to think Jackie would wait for her, foolhardy to think there wouldn't be any changes. But time had frozen in many ways, living up on the mountain, and it's only now that she begins to feel its movement again, caught blind-sided in the tide of it.

Would Jackie even know her? Want her? She had left her to raise another man's children, but she had done that for everyone's protection, had always intended to return. She'd told Jackie that. Told her she loved her. But love hadn't saved her family, hadn't saved Desidero, and perhaps it had failed, here, too.]

We keep pieces of everyone, whether we want to or not.

Hah. ( Cue LE AMERICAN. Sorry, tinyangryfrench. At least it isn't Roger. ) I dunno about nothing being original, but I kinda like the thing about people building each other up.

( And a glance at that cigarette. ) Good brand?
