katayla "Marry me," Matthew says, and Mary can feel the words ghosting across her skin. "Will you?"
Mary shakes her head, trying to draw back, but Matthew holds her in place, her face cupped between his hands. "Matthew," she tries to say, but the word catches her in her throat.
It's too much, it's too soon. They don't know each other, they might not even like each other. A million excuses run through her mind, but she knows that she won't speak any of them, because excuses are all that they would be.
Mary loves him.
She doesn't know how or when or even why, but she does, and he's sitting across from her waiting for an answer that she doesn't know how to give. Yes seems too simple after all that's happened between them, and no is no longer an answer that she can imagine giving him.
Matthew waits patiently, his eyes fast on hers. He doesn't push or prod or try to coerce, he just waits, and it's the most effective form of persuasion Mary can imagine.
Mary leans forward and captures his mouth with hers once more. There's more urgency to this kiss, an urgency that Mary knows she should pretend not to know, but that she's helpless to resist. She doesn't want to resist. She wants to kiss Matthew until all other thoughts are drowned out of her head and she can give him the answer that she wants and that he deserves.
But of course it doesn't last. Matthew is too much a gentleman to ever let such a thing happen. He draws back from the kiss, taking her hands in his. He raises them to his lips, his eyes never leaving hers. "Marry me," he says again. "Please, Mary."
He's looking at her with such intention, and when she opens her mouth to speak, the yes is there on the tip of her tongue. It's not the answer she gives.
"I need time," she says instead. "Please, just a little time."
