After he sees Tyler at Caroline’s, Matt sees them together everywhere he goes.

He sees them at school, in the halls and in the library, huddled over books, heads bent together and Matt knows Tyler’s never read a book he didn’t have to before. They meet at the Grill, but they never stay, and he’ll watch them walk off down the sidewalk together, never touching, but walking together in a way he just knows means they’re sharing something that he’s not a part of.

If someone were to ask Matt what bothers him the most about seeing them together, the fact that they’ve got secrets he’s not a part of or the idea that Caroline might be moving on without him, he’s not sure what he’d say.

So Matt watches and he waits, waits until he can’t keep the question that he’s wanted to ask her for weeks now back anymore.

“What are you keeping from me, Care?”

He asks her and then he doesn’t bother to wait for the answer, just takes her face between his hands the way he’s wanted to do for weeks now, too, and kisses her with all the feeling that he’s held in since the night they broke up. He kisses her and she kisses him back, and he thinks, yes, this for just a second and then Caroline pulls back, shaking her head.

“No,” she says, looking up at him with big, pleading eyes. “We can’t, I mean, Matt --”

He laughs then, a little bitterly. “Right,” he says. “I should have known.”

Caroline looks confused. “Should have known what?” she asks.

“Tyler,” he says, and Caroline looks even more confused.

“But there’s nothing to know,” she says. “Matt, I promise, there’s nothing to know.”

“Then why can’t I kiss you?” he asks. “I miss you, Care. I miss us.”

She bites her lip and he can’t help himself, he kisses her again. “Caroline,” he breathes against her mouth, and for one desperate, perfect second, she kisses him.

Then she slips from his arms and runs away, across the parking lot.

He watches her go, and thinks he should have known. Caroline was a good thing, the best thing, and Matt knows better than anyone that those don’t last.
