"Why did we ever think," Eloise said, with a heavy sigh, "that planning a joint debut ball was a good notion?"
Penelope shook her head, too tired to even speak. "I haven't the faintest idea." She glared at her best friend and sister-in-law. "You, however, should have known better. You've already been through this once."
"I know," Eloise groaned. "It makes it all the worse."
"What's all the worse?" Colin asked, walking into the room with Eloise's husband, Philip. He bent to kiss his wife's cheek hello. "Don't tell me you're still making preparations for the girls coming out."
Penelope raised an eyebrow at him. "Did you think it was going to plan itself?"
"I had hoped," Philip said, taking a seat next Eloise. He smiled at her. "Hello, wife."
"Hello, husband," Eloise returned. "Unlike my foolish older brother, you knew better. Or have you forgotten Amanda's debut?"
Philip sighed. "Unfortunately, no. I have not." He looks around the room. "Shouldn't the girls be assisting with the planning?"
Eloise and Penelope looked at each other and promptly burst out laughing.
Penelope managed to get control of herself first. "That was truly an excellent joke, Philip," she said, dabbing at the corners of her eyes. "Truly."
He frowned. "It wasn't meant to be a joke." He looked at Colin. "Don't you think the girls should be helping?"
Colin looked up guiltily from the food tray. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" He smiled sheepishly. "I was --"
"It's alright," Penelope said, patting him on the cheek with a fond smile on her face. "We all know how you are about food."
Eloise nodded. "Some of us better than others." She wrinkled up her nose. "Although, I do have to say that I find it supremely unfair that you still eat like that at your age and don't gain any weight at all."
He shrugged. "It's a blessing."
"And I think we should turn our attention back to the ball," Penelope interjected smoothly, at the look on Eloise's face. Shall we?" Colin made a move to get up and she grabbed his arm. "Oh no you don't," she said. "You're here now and that means you can help."
"That goes for you, too," Eloise said, eyebrow raised at her husband. "In case you had thought otherwise."
Philip nodded his head. "I would be delighted."
Eloise snorted her disbelief, but turned her attention back to Penelope. "What's next?" she asked.
Penelope began to answer and Philip and Colin traded pained looks over their wives heads, before turning their attention back to the conversation. They knew better than to argue.
