Request: For austen, who wanted Bonnie and Jeremy's first date. Let's say spoilers through 2x09, shall we?

When Jeremy finally asked her out for their first, real, official date, Bonnie expected pool at the Grill. Or a movie. Or maybe even bowling. Something completely boring and predictable.

He takes her to a karaoke bar that's having an under-18 night. It's definitely not boring or predictable. It's also completely terrifying.

"I don't sing," she says, pitching her voice over the crowd as they find a table in the back. "You know that, right?"

He grins at her, the grin that's been tying her stomach into knots for weeks, and helps her out of her coat. He bends down to whisper in her ear, and a shiver goes down her spine. "Come on, you have to."

She shakes her head and sits, anxious for more space. "I really don't."

"We'll see," he says while he's trying to catch the eye of a waitress. Once he does, he turns back to look at her. "Besides, you do sing. I remember you and Elena and Caroline all pretending you were Britney Spears."

Bonnie groans and buries her head in her hands. "Oh my god," she moans. "You do not."

He pries her hands from her face, rubbing his thumb across her cheek. "I do. You were really cute." He hesitates, like he's debating whether he should say anything else. A blush spreads across his cheeks, and when he finally speaks, it's rushed and all comes out sounding like one word. "You've always been really cute."

Their waitress picks that exact moment to show up at the table.

Jeremy's hand drops from her cheek like it's on fire and now Bonnie's the one fighting off the urge to blush. Of all the things he could have said to her, that wasn't even on the list.

"What do you want?" the waitress demands, looking frazzled.

"A Coke," Jeremy says. "Bonnie?"

"Diet Coke, please," Bonnie replies. "Thanks."

The waitress walks away without another word and an awkward silence falls over them. Bonnie stares down at the fake wood of the table, looking for patterns, as if they'll help her know what to say. She still doesn't know when she stopped being able to talk around Jeremy. Just one day, she woke up and there he was. Not the kid she remembered, but a really cute boy, with floppy hair and broad shoulders and terrible taste in flannel shirts. A really cute boy that makes her tongue tied and her palms sweat and --

Strong fingers close around her hand and she looks up to find his eyes intent on her face. He smiles at her and she can't help but smile back. She turns her hand over and laces her fingers through his. It feels right.

"So what are you going to sing?" she asks, eyebrow raised at him. "You were planning on singing, right?"

"Enter Sandman."

Bonnie blinks. She can't tell if he's serious or not -- he was totally deadpan when he said it, but really? He can't be serious.

"What, you don't think I can make that work?" Jeremy asks, his lips quirking up into a smile. "I'm hurt."

"No, no," she rushes to say. "That's not it -- it's just. That's not a very karaoke song, is it?"

"I feel like that's a dare," he says, and now he's flat out grinning. Bonnie's pretty sure that if she were standing up, her knees would be weak. "Now I have to do it." He releases her hand and jumps up from his seat, darting off to add his name to the list before she can say anything at all.

When he takes the stage five minutes later, Bonnie only makes it through thirty seconds of the song before she starts to laugh. When he kisses her good night, hours later, she's still laughing. It wasn't the first date she was expecting; it was better.
