Nicholas Hughes, Sylvia Plath’s son commits suicide - Times OnlineThis is such sad news, wrought with such bitter irony. I've been a huge fan of Sylvia Plath for over ten years; I even wrote a play about the last days of her life for my senior creative writing class in high school. Such a shame that depression runs in the family. I know that her ( Read more... )

It is. I imagine growing up in the shadow of your famous writer mother who famously committed suicide when you were a baby was really tough on him and contributed to his depression. And his stepmother -- the woman Ted Hughes was with after Sylvia died -- committed suicide and killed her and Ted's 4-year-old daughter at the same time, only a few years after Sylvia's death. So much tragedy in that family.

Oh. I just read this on Yahoo. Definitely some sad news. I hope this doesn't sound callous, but this seems to run in their family - yikes. I hope her daughter is all right, especially in light of this new tragedy. :(

I don't think that's callous at all, it's true! It's a horrible thing to have run in your family, though. Fortunately Frieda Hughes seems like a pretty level-headed person despite her family tragedies, so I'm hoping that she won't ever resort to anything that drastic. Growing up with the knowledge that your mother killed herself as a way of dealing with her problems must be really hard, though.

Oh, well that's good to hear, that she's pretty level-headed. Oh, absolutely, that has to be a terrible thing to live with! I can't imagine. Not only is it bad that their mother committed suicide, she was in the public eye so I imagine that makes it worse.
