LJ Idol Mini-Season A Million

Jun 27, 2024 22:03

Apparently there's finally a new "mini" season of the "The Real LJ Idol," the writing contest that has now wholly moved off LJ, and calls itself mini presumably solely to prevent me from ever achieving my goal of being the first to have over 200 official entries ;)

On any account I'll be participating and encourage you to as well. It's good for ( Read more... )

Sorry, what is LJ Idol? I followed the link, but the actual gameplay is not described. How do you win?

Oh I thought that's where I knew you from? It's a writing contest that used to be on Livejournal and used to be almost annual. There's a prompt every week and after each deadline there's voting that's either public or contestants only and the bottom vote getters get voted out, like a reality show. I hate reality shows but it actually makes for a good motivator to do some writing because one has not merely a deadline but the fear that one will be voted out if one doesn't cut it. Obviously and especially once the pool starts to get small politics begin to come into play a little bit, and I rather suspect the organizer secretly loves that but that's not until the game has gone for sometimes 20 weeks and by then I've ridden the ride long enough. And until then I feel like it's relatiely merit based, one can tell when one's writing isn't connecting with the audience. I think it's helped me a lot over the years.

No, I've never seen it before! Can people observe without participating? What are the prompts like?

Yes! It used to be run here on livejournal but moved to Dreamwidth after Russia began to behave abominably, because apparently livejournal is at least partially owned by Russian oligarchs connected to Putin now. Basically the guy who runs it (a mysterious figure known only as "Gary") will post an entry with a prompt (usually a phrase) and people make posts inspired by that prompt, post them in their own livejournal (/dreamwithal), and post a link back to their post in comments to the prompt-post (which should be the only comments to said post. Now one _can_ read the entries as they come in, and usually especially at the beginning of the season when there's a lot to get through (I think in its glory days there'd be like 300 starters), but mostly its easier to wait until, after the deadline (usually like 5 days), Gary posts a poll that links to every entry, and then its easy to go down the list, read them and vote.

You can see the old posts from when it was last on livejournal at therealljidol. In addition to the prompt and voting posts you'll ( ... )
