May your travels treat you well! I do not envy you that short connection at JFK from a transatlantic flighr with customs included to a domestic flight. Been there often and we have refused to ever fly into JFK again. Lisbon is wonderful. Enjoy!
I completely agree with what you said about having good relationships being how to have a good visit. Completely true with my experiences with the farmer's market. I've become friends with one of the farmers and always buy from her first, and there are a couple of people I will not buy from because they were rude at some point in the past.
Have safe travels! The worst time I've ever had with customs was when I left Istanbul. I didn't think they were going to let me out of the country with how long they took X-raying every item in my backpack individually. Same thing happened in Athens. Then same at JFK, but at least then I could ask what the issue was. I had an item they didn't recognize. I told the agent she could unwrap whatever she wanted to. Turns out, I bought my mom a metal turtle in the bazaar in Istanbul that was a base for a round rock, and the turtle was causing all the drama. I stuck it in my checked luggage before my next flight, and gave my mom grief about how much trouble her gift caused, lol.
