The Three Musketeers -- The Bad Guys of their Own Story??

Apr 25, 2023 02:17

So I just finished reading (with my ears) The Three Musketeers. I thought I was already familiar with the story because I'd seen the 1993 movie thirty years ago plus all the usual cultural references, but it surprised me a bit. I'll be unrestrained with the spoilers here so if you don't want it to be spoilerized quick throw the device you're ( Read more... )

Hmm, my music teacher all through my high school years was a very French Frenchman. He was a musician par exelence and a true gentleman. But his name was D’Artagnan [Liagre]. In retrospect, shall I look back upon him with skepticism?

I was not fond of the Three Musketeers at all. Had I been a braver (or dumber) student (or if I turned in the book report NOW) I would have added a letter "B" and an additional letter "S" to the author's name...

I read The Three Musketeers probably a decade before the movie came out and didn't like it at all. I liked the movie, though, and I don't think I even thought about the book then.

Yeah I'm glad Ii had the book as an audiobook I'm not sure I'd have gotten through it as a physical book. In fact I had a physical copy somewhere and had tried to start it but didn't really get anywhere with it. Audiobook is definitely an effective way to get through tedious material ;)

I'm not entirely certain I actually finished the paper book . . . My tolerance for what I will listen to in an audiobook is much higher than for what I'll read, especially if the reader has a good voice. ;)

Well, at least now you know why the various movie adaptations bear no resemblance to the source novel !!! Try reading/listening to the Hunchback Of Notre Dame instead - that should have you hating priests, bishops & cardinals for all the right reasons...

Yeah I can definitely understand why they essentially reversed the plot, and it tells you something about it that they had to essentially reverse a whole bunch of stuff to make them the good guys in the movie.

So is Hunchback better than Three Musketeers then? It's definitely on my list, as I like to read the original of all these cultural touchstones

I like Monte Christo better too. But, it has been a while since I've read either...

Yeah like I said, he's a "Mary Sue" he's literally good at everything with no particular flaws... but somehow it's still fun to read about his revenge getting. The biggest flaw I found with the book is other than the guy who wanted to steal his fiancee I felt like the motives of some of his antagonists were very flimsy. And it again I was surprised about the differences from the movie.
