There is a town about 200 miles north of where I live, called Echuca, which lies on the Murray River and has been flooding for over 20 days now

I really feel for those on the wrong side of the levee. I wonder how the decision on where to build the levee was made. If I lived on the other side of it, I'd be horribly upset too.
When I lived in New Orleans, there were always issues with flooding. The levee had been built (before I lived there) to protect the wealthy and historical parts of the city. The people who always got the worst of the flooding were the lower middle class and poor. :(
Either way, though, there is no excuse to abuse the volunteers who are trying to help. :(
You asked how people cannot help. Some people are not physically able to do what needs to be done. I fall into that category, but I find ways to help anyway, such as speaking to groups to generate fundraising or making reminder phone calls. I might not be able to lift a sand bag but I will hunt down and encourage those who can! I am finding more and more though that there are folks who just don't care about others which is truly sad. Thank you for being one of the ones who does care and steps up to help! *hugs*

I'm glad that you do volunteer. I know that the people who are flooded appreciate it.

Well to be fair I think they're equally wealthy on both sides but yeah I can understand how the people on the wrong side of the levee feel.
Though taking out on us volunteers is more than a little misplaced, imho
