Floods

Today it rained very heavily, on top of the large amount of rain we've already gotten this season that has filled the lakes and ponds and saturated the ground. My housemate Trent called me at 16:12 this afternoon, he was trying to get out of Birregurra, the village we live in. As he described it two of three roads out of town were already ( Read more... )

Wow! There's going to be more and more of this as the climate warms. Yikes. I'm curious about the actual process of filling sandbags; is it a two person thing, with one holding the bag and the other wielding a shovel?

The SES people had this great invention for sandbag filling, which you can see a few of in the background of that one picture - its a segment of broad PVC pipe about 15 inches long or so, with hand holds cut into it, you put the back of it in to the sand bag and scoop with the front. I found about three to four scoops of sand with this filled the sandbag. Seemed much easier than using a shovel would have been!

Cool and low-tech, and it lets each person work alone!

Flooding is a major climate change manifestation...and yikes! Seeing all the road closures around you must be a bit unsettling. Hoping the Barwon doesn't overflow, much anyway.
Stay safe, Chris!

I'm glad you were able to get home! That's a lot of flooded roads!

I'm very lucky where we live in that it has never flooded, not even in the worst hurricanes. We're way inland which means we never had to worry about storm surges (which was the biggest problem in Ft. Myers with the latest hurricane.) And our land is on top of very porous limerock, so the water soaks through to the underground river and flows out to other areas.

I've been watching the news this morning. The floods on the Eastern Seaboard are astronomical, and they have been continuing month after month after month.

Yeah I don't think our floods here were anything like those floods, those floods were crazy!
