Sinking of the Pilgrim

Mar 31, 2020 00:28

March 30th - 3,983 active cases in Australia, 279 new last 24 hours.

As I woke up at 06:30 this morning, still pitch black outside, I reached for my phone to message Cristina, the first thing I do every morning, and... why do I have 20 messages from eight different people??

It's very sad about the Pilgrim...you do have to wonder about the insurance claim aspects of her sinking. Of course, even neglect may make any insurance compensation null and void but who knows. I find the photos heartbreaking.

And now I want pizza and they're not even allowing takeaway here in Spain.

That was really nice of you to remember the medical staff today! With so many giving their all here in Spain and dying even (we have over 12,000 health workers ill with coronavirus), they deserve every bit of recognition we can give them.

That's a real shame about the ship. I fear a lot of "nice to have" type projects are going to fall victim to the current situation.

Definitely all the maritime museum type places 'm aware of are absolutely desperate for a way to cover their fixed costs.

Yeah and my favorites are all big and expensive to maintain:

  • The RMS Queen Mary - hotel and museum in California
  • The SS Rotterdam - hotel and conference centre in Rotterdam
  • The SS United States, moribund in Philadelphia, the next step in whose redevelopment was announced like a week before this thing hit
  • The RMS QE2 - hotel in Dubai where I'm not likely to go, probably the most sustainable until the price of oil dropped

I wouldn't have even been able to follow those instructions if I'd been there, I don't have a car for anybody to go out to to call me.

There was an instruction for people who didn't come by car. I think it might have just been to stand in the corner of the parking lot or sit at a nearby bench maintaining social isolation distances

I'm very sorry to hear about the Pilgrim.

That was a really nice thing to do, taking the honey to the physicians. Doctors and nurses and the staff in hospitals are at such a high risk, and they continue on.

I hate to see a fine ship reach the end of her days.
