It was in fact the last that was occupied by the Moors before they were driven out of Spain.
Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca is one of the greatest names in history because it's so much fun to say. Although I will agree his account is...I guess "questionable" would be the polite word for it.
There's a fictionalized account of Esteban's story which I've also read and highly recommend: The Moor's Account. It's the story of the expedition from his perspective and speculates about where he ended up after his supposed death.
