The pager's distinctive tone and buzz jolted Murray as if he'd touched an electric fence. He plunged his hand into his shorts' pocket and fished it out ( Read more... )

This was such a great description of fighting a wildfire. I enjoyed the details, but I especially loved the idea of still feeling like you're being pushed back by the pressure of the hose even after it has been turned off. And of course, the ending was great and unexpected!

It's true! You're left feeling like you're being pushed back for hours after!

Great detail made everything very real. I agree with what was said above about the feeling of the hose pushing you back even after it's been turned off. I do wonder about Murray at the end though. Is he the one who started the original fire or is he trying to back-burn the brush they didn't get to so the fire doesn't get to his home? I feel like this could have a tragic sequel to it. Or maybe not so tragic - I'm an optimist.

Oh no he didn't start the original. Yeah he's going to start a backburn to complete the firebreak

A great opportunity for you to write from a point of experience on this!

An action-packed story, with a lot of realistic detail.

Is Baz short for something in that region, or is it just a regular name/nickname? I'm thinking of Baz Luhrmann...

Probably short for Basil or Barry. I was kind of making a joke of the Australian tendency to make names into Baz / Muz (another Murray), Cazz, Tazz, Lozz etc etc etc etc

Ooh, that hadn't even occurred to me, since Basil isn't even a name in American culture.

I'd never heard the other ones, so that was fun. Maybe you're "Kuz" instead of Kris over there...
