When We Remembered Zeehan

Monday, November 24th, 1642 - Two fluyts are making their way across the limitless southern seas, their sails full and taut with the trade winds. A look-out up in the Zeehaen's crosstrees, huddling against the cold, looks out toward the grey horizon, where the sun should soon appear. The first golden sliver appears, straight ahead, and as the sea ( Read more... )

Looks like a really great trip. I just became infatuated with the Mona museum and now must go there.

Yeah we didn't end up making it but I've been hearing so much about it!

I am loving your accounts and photos of this trip. And I do think two cars going in opposite directions could have passed each other very carefully on the narrow road...if they were small enough cars. You should see the goat track with hairpin curves that goes up a mountain to the home of friends of ours here...and it's two-way traffic. We've had some scary encounters there.

Lovely everything! And I didn't know that bumblebees don't live on the Aus mainland. There are loads down here in Spain.

And yes, that crockery is worth coveting!

I was looking at that picture and I swear it looks wider in that picture than it was in some places!! though quite possibly it just looks narrower when you're actually sitting in the car ;D

Yep no bumblebees on the mainland here! I'm not sure how they got to Tasmania!

Lovely crockery, if I ever see it in a store...!

I like that you can get Thai food in Tasmania. Living in New York I take all kinds of international food for granted.

Yeah. One thing I miss about California is absolutely any kind of food is within ten minutes drive at all times. There's thai in the big cities in Australia but out in the country if you don't want one of the same six things every place has you're out of luck!!

You can drive to MONA - but David (the owner) deliberately made parking a bitch. It was originally a winery (and still is). They have an amazing resturant there that I have been to once - to celebrate handing in the dratted PhD. I remember when they opened it, I lived on one of the hills nearby and there was all sorts of fire and fireworks for three odd days.
I still cant believe your Mum didnt let you go to Strahan - its a two day adventure by itself!

That's the other thing I noticed about MONA ... normal museums you never hear about the owner, but I keep hearing David this David that about the MONA owner. Quite a character or something?
