Tasmania! Day 1!

Monday, February 19th, Devonport - the sky is slate grey and casts a dreary industrial look on the town around the waterfront. Across the estuary the Spirit of Tasmania ferry we'd recently debarked looks like a giant toy with its discordantly optimistic red and white. I'm standing under giant bronze statues of flowers. There's a nearby ( Read more... )

I would describe the way Tasmanians say scallop is the scall part rhymes with "all." The word rhymes with "wallop."

Here in California we would say the scall part rhymes with the name "Al." Or it rhymes with the way we say "Shall up."

Pokies - this election was fought on pokies. Federal - who owns most of the pubs and the two legal casinos in Tassie has apparently bought the liberals and they hold the license for all the poker machines in tassie until 2050 or something. Enjoy you trip, I miss living there.

Ah I did see some posters about pokies, I didn't realize that was the main issue. And you're not in Tassie anymore? Where are you?

Central west of NSW. University academic in a small town. Left tassie in 2011 after living there from 2002. Only sold my house there last year.

Cool beans. Haven't spent much time in NSW, though I loved the small university town I went to school in so if all small university towns are as lovely it sounds good. Also I kinda fell in love with Tasmania and want to move there now ;)

I have a good friend in Tasmania and she often talks about the liberals in a not so nice way so I know they're definitely not on the left.

The sunflower photo is incredibly lovely. I so want to Tas.

(I agree that all posts should have a photo so thank you!)

A big field of poppies makes me think of Wizard of Oz and falling asleep in them to the point of death.

The water looks so blue in one of the pictures! Now I'm really curious about Tasmania.

I knew Tassie used to be called van Dieman's Land but had no idea about the word Vandiemonian. That's kind of epic.

Your photos are gorgeous. I haven't visited Tasmania yet but it is high on my list. We were going to try to get down there last year, but we didn't have enough time off to really do it justice.

I picked up this really cool book that's pretty much a contemporary travelogue of 1850s Melbourne from an American perspective -- an American merchant from Boston was sent to represent his firm and wrote letters to newspapers back in the States about what he was seeing around him, and now it's been put together in a book! That's where I first encountered references to "Vandemonians" and at first Ii was like "what is that???" before I had my "oh!" moment.
