So sorry about the potential data loss :( I have cried about those things, it is as if a part of my life goes away with those pictures! Nowadays I am kind of paranoid about saving at least 3 copies of everything in different places but I am sure I always forget something! That second picture is really neat!
Yeah I'm a little bit kicking myself because I knew one is supposed to have things backed up on at least two places, and that I should get a second external memory drive, but as one may note, ALL my electronics are in need of replacement and I simply can't afford to fork out money on everything that "needs" to be replaced so a second external hard drive was somewhere down the list... though as they say, now I'll need to spend more to get my data recovered sooo.... ::sigh::
Oh and re in the picture, I really like it too! I can't take credit for it of course, and I think it was kind of accidentally great since the rest of the pictures the guy holding my camera took were as usual throw-aways (I joke that only the pure of heart can operate the DSLR, since most randos who find it in their hands completely fail to take some semblance of a decent picture), but I like how for once I'm doing an action and not looking goofy, and also it's kind of interesting how the two guys in the background look like they're praying or something. I noticed a similar thing with the pictures from a previous trip, everyone looked like a bunch of cultists around the hive!
Instead of bothering with an external hard disk as primary storage, buying a new and vastly larger *internal* hard disk for your computer would be a good option.
Data loss is a fact of life if you don't have redundant copies - instead of using the external disk as primary storage, use it purely as backup.
The "cloud" is of course also very nice for backup. I like that I can shove all of my photos into Google Photos (not just the hand-picked good ones).
Can I make it automatically back up documents somewhere in the cloud? Fortunately my documents were still on the computer and therefore still exist but I would like to (A) evacuate them from that computer; and (B) back them up :-/
Yes, Dropbox is what you want. It gives you a folder (the "dropbox") that's automatically replicated in the cloud and on any other computers where you have Dropbox installed.
There's a client for Google Drive that accomplishes the same thing but probably Dropbox is slicker.
Just as a quick check, you might consider cleaning your viewfinder with a bit of alcohol and a q-tip. I thought I was clearly losing eyesight faster than I thought too, but it turned out the thing was just filthy and had a layer of grease, probably from when I hastily wipe dust off with my dirty fingers.
