There are a zillion types of tamal (tamles, plural) in Mexico alone. In the north, they tend to be wrapped in corn husks, in the south in banana leaves. I can't get the little, really spicy and greasy ones that I've had in Texas here in Mexico City. I love exploring the local food. I think some of these places are so poor, they don't even have a cuisine. Asking a taxi driver in Guatemala, "What is the typical Guatemalan dish?" He's like, "Grilled meat." :-/
Haha many places have the "grilled meat," I thought it was funny / very disconcerting when I first saw it on a menu in Nigeria -- they did't specify chicken or beef or whatever, just "grilled meat" O_o
