Spokenn!

( Beginning of this Adventure )

Monday, May 22nd - This day I was finally headed somewhere new (Spokane)! Unfortunately to get there I'd have to drive up the boring ole five a hundred or so miles to Portland, which I love, without having time to stop there, and then I'd be in new territory for the next several hours.

BURGERVILLE!!!!!!!!!! It's my absolute favorite "fast food" place, though they don't like to call it fast food, something more cheesy like "diner food, fast." They are a chain, but a very small regional one. The furthest south is in Albany, so you would've missed it in Eugene. I forget what the furthest north is, possibly Portland or Vancouver, so getting it in the Dalles meant you got basically your last chance at it! Yay!

What I love about them is they do seasonal stuff - so when the Walla Walla sweet onions are in season, they hand-make, every morning, fresh sweet onion rings. They do this delicious chocolate hazelnut milkshake when the filberts* are in season, etc. They've also made a big push to use only local, fresh ingredients, including their beef, which I really appreciate.

*I don't know if you know this, but hazelnut is basically just the more appealing marketing name for filberts. I grew up near filbert orchards so I'm all sniffy about that. They're filberts, dammit! But I still find myself using hazelnut.

I'm so glad I completely accidentally stumbled into it then!!!

Also I feel like I remember there being a salmon burger on the menu?

and WHAT THE DIVIL IS A FILBERT?!? I've never heard this word before. Going on what you're saying above.. is it literally the same thing as a hazelnut? Now I'm going to have to google this...

Yep, same nut!

And Burgerville is amazing. How you feel about In-and-Ou is how I feel about Burgerville.

I have two sisters in the PDX area. One is in Vancouver, WA. I love it there.

I love PDX. I don't generally much like cities but I would live in PDX. I've looked for jobs there on a number of occasions.

We are 2 hours drive north of Spokane, you were sort of in my neighborhood! The pine pollen has been atrocious this year. My car is covered with it.
