The driver of the truck was apparently following the "I'm bigger than you" rule. Happens a lot in Texas.

In maritime law there's complex right of way rules that basically require the more manouverable vessel type to give way, so any motor vessel (except where limited by draft) must give way to any sailing vessel, no matter how small. ...in practical effect though people frequently mention "the law of mass," that you get the fuck out of the way of a giant container ship.

I've heard a lot of stories though about navy ships ordering sailboats out of their way and the sailboat captain knowing he was in the right just shining them on and saying "no can do!" ... because though the Navy will use a tone of authority they don't actually HAVE the authority. ...at least on an individual ship basis, I certainly wouldn't wander into an area of sea they've officially closed off for missile tests though!
