I called my roommate but he didn't answer (I assume he was passed out drunk somewhere) so I had to bite the bullet and call my boss and he sent someone over. Thank god I wasn't in the field that is 40 minutes from anywhere else.
Dr Thorp reported that he forwarded the picture on to Dr Fondrk in honeybee genetics, who reported that its a rare recessive trait in cordovan bees. Now you know! I think that could easily explain the red back but I'm still very skeptical about the major morphological departures in the face! /:
Yeah I found pretty much the perfect hive for her -- it appeared to have been queenless but with a recently hatched queen cell -- which worked perfectly for my hypothesis she was a new queen out on a mating flight. I put her in and watched her for a few minutes to make sure the bees in the hive wouldn't be mean to her but they were being sweet to her so I think it was all good.
