So many things all at once. I'm getting a little Lovecraft, a literary reference, a lesson about insects, a moral and somewhat hippie (?) lesson for humanity, and a great ending to the incomplete sentence that is the topic.

Fantastic and fascinating.

That would be "gavagai" from "Word and Object" by Quine, mentioned above in the comments.

Also, I assume that the use of "noodly appendage" is an intentional Flying Spaghetti Monster reference. That is more cultural than literary.

Also, the method that the humans meet the aliens reminds me of something, but I can't place what.

Ah good good. (= The method they meet I made up but I wouldn't be suprised if its been described similarly before. I hoped that describing seeing the spaceship from planetside first woudl help put the reader in a position of seeing if from the alien's point of view, more apt to understand that in this case WE'RE the extraterrestrials coming from space and causing serious (and not unfounded) concern for the natives.
