business wise, i would say NYC because it has more prestige.

life wise, i would say DC because you can build stronger ties with your family and also you mentioned that DC made you a better lawyer, which in turn would give you a better rep down the road.

rhetorical questions..

what do you want from yourself now? do you want to stay in the big city or come and be near your family? if you went to NYC, how often would you be able to come home? if you stayed in DC, how often would you have breaks to visit friends in NYC? which job offers the better benefits?

if your torn between the two, examine the firms and what they will offer you. what do you need most? money? flexibility? vacation time? what is most important to you, regardless of location.

i hope i could help.

then again, are you going to have to "prove" yourself more in one firm versus the other?

i say fuck overexamining this shit. Fuck what everyone else thinks. If you want to live in DC, great - live there. If you want to be in NYC, awesome - live there. You are going to be just as successful wherever you go and whomever you work for. Ive seen you go to places where you know a lot of people and do fine; ive seen you move to a completely new city where you knew no one and do fine. That said, current friends shouldn't be an issue nor should that which the company offers in the short term. You will be a partner eventually in either of them. But instead of going into this deeper, i am going to digress to my second statement and leave it at that.
