I was thinking as I read it that the style was beautifully reminiscent of Alexander McCall Smith's, so there's your answer to that question. It's been a long time since I've read any of the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency books, but the characters felt right. And I loved the idea that the Doctor would find the best mechanic anywhere, whether he had experience with time machines or not, and get him to help with the TARDIS. And YAY for fixing the van together!

If you wrote more, I'd read it!

Haha - she could be the next Donna - although would she want to go anywhere where there were people who wouldn't fully comprehend the importance of her 97%? :D

Glad you enjoyed it,
Em x

Oh, this is lovely! It really gets the voice of Mr. J L B Matekoni.

I only have one little niggle; since the TARDIS can translate any language, I think the Doctor would actually pronounce everything correctly. I mean, canon hasn't told us whether he speaks English like a native because he learned the language, or because the TARDIS translates for him, but in either case, it would be strange if he didn't pronounce Botswana words correctly. Because either (a) the TARDIS translates, or (b) having learned English as a second language well enough that he speaks it like a native, he's got to be good at learning languages, including the proper accents. But that's just a niggle.

I actually would quite like to expand this fic into a proper doctor adventure featuring the whole Detective gang as well and showing the doctor’s first visit to Mr. J L B Matekoni...any opinions on that?
Do it! Do it!

Thank you for your thoughtful comments!

I had considered the translations aspect myself and decided that as both the Doctor and Mr. J.L.B Matekoni speak English throughout (the alternitive being Setswana which doesn't seem to be used in the books much), it would be odd if the Doctor suddenly switched from a perfect Botswana accent to an English accent. So they are said in same the way the Doctor likes to say 'Allonsy' while otherwise speaking English.

Hope that makes some sense!

I loved this. I only know #1 Ladies' Detective Agency from the TV series and not the books (I've been meaning to hunt up one) but the characters felt right. I'd love to read more if you expanded on this.

This story is a delight. It's a very unexpected crossover, but it works. Please do write more!
