First Project

Oct 02, 2010 16:46

Our first module is this month, and it's about the Midwifery Model of Care. The module demands that we examine our own beliefs about birth and womanhood and medical care.

Our first assignment is to reflect on these questions for an in-class discussion:

Who is responsible for the health of the pregnant woman and her unborn child ( Read more... )

It sounds like it would be lovely. However, I'd just ask yourself if you really have the time to do something like this - when is it due? Presumably you're talking about a hanging and not a full-size quilt, but it still sounds pretty complex.

Possibly you should also find a quilt shop in the area and see if you can talk to someone about the skills required for this. I have no idea what kinds of resources are out there for quilters, but maybe you could take some of the basic shapes of the people from pre-existing patterns?

It does sound awfully ambitious, especially on top of just having moved into a new place that I presume you're still setting up, and needing to get to know the area around you. Maybe you could ask the instructor if the design, or a touched up sketch, would suffice, and then plan on working on the quilt longer-term? Because it DOES sound like it would be absolutely beautiful.

Actually, I have a huge amount of time on my hands right now. My EMT test isn't until Thursday and I have very little need to study for it, no job, and class only one day a week. Other than this project, we don't have homework yet, although I'll have lots of reading once my first textbook arrives in the mail.

I think it's a great idea! I wish I had some input. But I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Rather than appliquing the women behind the trio, how about using fabric paint? That would save you the effort of cutting and sewing all those shapes.

Maybe sewing the midwife and partner in a cotton, and the mother in a felt, to make her stand out and add a three dimensional aspect to the piece? Felt I find is also far more forgiving that cotton.

It sounds wonderful :) I love the symbolism behind your ideas.

Omg I LOVE that idea! I hadn't even thought about using textures, etc, to make different parts of it 'pop.' You're a genius, thank you!
