Quick A:tLA viewing guide

rose_griffes asked at her post for a viewer's guide on which episodes are necessary for the plot in Avatar: the Last Airbender. I've attempted it? A:tLA fans, fill free to add on, it's been awhile since I watched the whole thing.

I want you to know that some of these cuts hurt me in my soul to make. I still never managed to cut more than 7 out of a 20 episode ( Read more... )

But how am I supposed to skip an episode with the description "Zuko, his chicken-horse of despair"? HOW?! BECAUSE IS IT A CHICKEN OR A HORSE OR WHAT?!

Heh. Thanks so much for doing this.

IT IS A LITERAL DESCRIPTION, OK? Symbolizing his existential angst (kind of like every other episode that way.)

Obviously my hope is by that point you won't want to. :)

And of course! It started out being a compromise show I started with a roommate one summer, but we both ended up really entertained by it. It's a good one.

I've started watching this because it seems that all my f-list ever does but but but... I'm not enamored. Lukewarm at most. Some folks have said it takes a while to pick up speed up, but I just did 1-5 and I'm still just meh about it. I almost hate to ask but is there a point where it's 'if you don't love it by now, you probably never will'? Because when I hit that point, I may just catch up on Dexter instead.

I'm not sure what the point is, but it's definitely not in early season one. The season 1 finale is awesome, and then there's season two. I guess if you don't love it by late season two?

Hmm, if you aren't really drawn to the plot/characters/anything now there may be not hard point where it suddenly gets interesting for you. If there's something that draws you more than the rest I might be able to narrow it down based on that? Early season 1 is definitely not the best the show will be yet, but it's all part of a piece plot and world-building wise.

(You may not go for this because I know some people *hate* watching out of order and this isn't a good show to do that for anyway, but if it comes down to "otherwise I'll stop watching right now" you might jump straight to 1-18 and finish out the last 3. If you like the show then, DEFINITELY go back and finish out the ones you hopped over, but if you're done then hey, less time spent I guess. Because the last few are gorgeous overall and if the world hasn't sucked you in then I don't know how it would.)

Yeah. This one's not happening for me. Aang turned into a gigantic fish monster and some girl became the moon and I can't do this show. Because what? No. It's nice to get what everyone's talking about though, but we're back to the 'high fantasy is not my cup of tea' sort of thing. I snooze through most epic quests. Thanks for the tips though.

Eh, it was a tough cut and I LIKED the Blue Spirit, but there's not such a shortage of Zuko and Aang eps and parallels elsewhere that I think the season won't make sense without it, which was the main thing I tried to do. I may change my mind when I rewatch with a friend who's getting into it for the first time. There's a few others I'm waffling on today (The Waterbending Scrolls, The Blue Spirit, Zuko Alone, and I've already added back in The Firebending Masters because I don't know why I cut it) They'll probably end up in bold later.

Honestly, a list of skippable eps is a weird thing to try for a show that's one long narrative arc anyway. I'd watch it all, yes. But I'll stick by the premise that a few eps like Jet and The Swamp aren't *necessary* to enjoying and understanding the show.

I have traced my lack of completely falling in love with this show somehow to my lack of falling in love with Zuko and his chicken horse of despair.

Hee, I liked Zuko a lot and, by the time Zuko Alone rolled around, found him hilarious. That probably helped. :)

Rewatching is fun and pretty quick, I'm starting a friend on the show now and definitely looking forward to that later stretch of episodes.
