Here be new obsessions: the ambivalent show rec edition

Mar 30, 2010 20:43

In my almost trend of picking up new, yet deceased shows, I have been watching Life, featuring extreme amounts of prettiness from actors Damien Lewis and Sarah Shah, and most frames of the show itself.  I love it in the way I only love shows I've watched the entirety of in a week or so. *g*

Spoilers through the first few episodes of Season 2, but ( Read more... )

Oh, Life. I loved that show so much. Fantastic acting, interesting characterization, awesome cinematography, kinda lame mystery of the week... *sigh* I'm feeling all nostalgic now! Charlie Crews is sort of the anti-Jamie Bamber for me--I think Jamie Bamber is gorgeous and appealing as a person, but Lee Adama does nothing for me most of the time; whereas Damien Lewis, even with his natural British accent, isn't that interesting, but as Charlie Crews he's very watchable.

[info]humansrsuperior 's vid Be Okay is the best thing I can think of to show how light is used on the show
The same vidder made this, which I adore. To me it defines why Charlie is so terrifying in his own way.

And then there's Dani and her messed-up recent past and messed-up family life and yeah, she's awesome.

And Ted! I love Ted!

Life fics I liked.

I have thoughts on the season two finale that I never posted. I'll be interested to see your take on it.

eta: I forgot to say--it was actually fanfic that sort-of reconciled me to Dani & whatsisface Tidwell ( ... )

Yay, a Life fan! With an organized fic rec system! :D

It's really a great little show that's been on my radar for awhile, but I'm a little surprised I'm enjoying it this much. And yeah, Charlie can be truly scary (one of the commenters on that excellent vid referred to his "Zendetta", which may be my new favorite phrase). Easy to sympathize with, but even the Zen doesn't necessarily make him a better person, just functional. And Ted! Who I think is the only person to get Charlie and interesting all by himself.

Charlie Crews is sort of the anti-Jamie Bamber for meHeh! I don't really know enough about Damien Lewis to compare, but it's amazing how much more attractive Jaime Bamber is to me as himself ( ... )

I tried to watch the pilot of Life on a plane one time, but I think, reading your rec of it that perhaps I was just tired (I had been up for over 24 hours at the time!) and maybe I should give it a second chance...

Re: the photoshop issue, there has been an apparently reasonably good plugin for the GIMP that does something similar around for years. I don't know a damn thing about using programs like this and frankly, while I have GIMP, it makes my eyes go funny even worse than photoshop does (which makes them go pretty funny to start with!). Hell, I also don't even know if you HAVE GIMP! But, um, I think you might?

Either way -

I have no idea how it would measure up to a centerpiece feature in a massive new commercial release but, um, there are some reasonably impressive pictures linked from that page at least?

I'd definitely recommend the attempt, it's not a mind-blowing show, but it has much more than I was expecting going in. Very entertaining and there's a lot of complex characterization and ambiguity, which is nice. :)

I do have GIMP! I'll check if that plugin works with GIMPshop (since really the idea of learning multiple, counter-intuitive image programs seems too complicated for what I want ;)) It sounds a little like an analog for the PS clone stamp and some other texture functions, which will be useful. Hey, it may even be better. :)
