Banff! Now with more owl!

Nov 06, 2011 21:46

I spent a few days in Banff last week for the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. I wasn't really enthused about going, truth to tell, but it was a work thing and, well, work = money to pay the mortgage and I do love the house so though I hate leaving home (in an ever-increasing and, in fact, downright worrying way), I dutifully got my hair cut ( Read more... )

Well, thanks. emmarytz November 7 2011, 20:51:27 UTC
It was with my short lens, too. Pretty damned amazing, I found it, and alarming to realize just how many voles must be in an apparently quiet bit of meadow. -em. ps. Advance notice: Eli and I are planning to visit the Fill on Friday. Not at the crack of dawn.

Re: The train doesn't stop in Banff alexfandra November 7 2011, 22:47:19 UTC
I actually went to the Via Rail Canada site to see if they had a Banff stop. They don't. Closest is Jasper. Bet I could rent a car or take a bus from there....

This tells you how extremely envious I am of your experience. Man. You would not have been able to get me back into that conference for love or money.

The Barn Owl I got to watch hunting over the meadows at Magnuson park made a strike about every five minutes. That was at night, so I couldn't see what it was striking but yeah, rodents are prolific!

I'd be happy to meet up with you and Eli at the Fill on Friday later in the day, unless it's pouring down rain. It's been getting a bit too chilly there early in the morning. The Buffleheads are out in force now!

Just say when.

But there's a shuttle! emmarytz November 8 2011, 07:17:33 UTC
Does the train stop in Calgary? Because if you fly (which I know you don't), you fly into Calgary and then get onto a shuttle for an hour and a half to get to Banff. Oddly, Mr. Bannick said he'd have flown to Banff if he'd known about this owl; are they so rare? I still long to see a saw-whet. And, for that matter, every other owl in existence.

I'll let you know when we head towards the Fill; we likely won't decide until we're about out the door but then it'll take us an hour from that time anyway. -em.
