Summary: Don finally gets to see his mother

"Hey, sweets."
Don screwed up his face, squinting, not believing his eyes.
"Mom? What are you doing here?"
"Well, I think the more important question, honey, is what are you doing here? You know it's not your time."
Don gazed at his mother, trying to be comforted by her smile, but just felt confused.
"How am I seeing you?"
"That doesn't matter. What matters is that you've got people who need you, things to accomplish. You should be getting back."
"But I miss you."
"I know, Donnie."
As he drew near she laid her hand on his cheek and he turned into that familiar warmth he'd missed so badly.
"Why did you come to Charlie and Dad and not me?" he asked, the painful doubt finally given voice.
"Because I was afraid of this: if you saw me you'd want to come with me."
"I do." In that moment he wanted nothing more than the peace and love that would come with his mother's embrace.
"But you can't. Not yet." She withdrew and the warmth of her hand remained, ghostly and fading as she disappeared.

"Clear!"
Don's body arced off the bed and his heart beat again.
