"Well, you two made short work of those dinners!" The waitress beamed as she removed the empty plates. "Can I interest you boys in some dessert?"
"Just coffee for me," Sam said.
Dean leaned forward, giving the waitress a charming grin.
"I would love a slice of that world famous apple pie your little sign advertises."
The waitress's expression shifted to regret.
"I'm sorry, darlin'. We ran out of pie about twenty minutes ago."
"No pie?" Dean looked crestfallen.
"Sorry," the woman said. "It's almost closing time so I didn't think anything of it. How about some ice cream?"
"No thanks," Dean said, sitting back, dejected.
"He kind of has a thing for pie," Sam explained. "And the pie he had for his birthday last week was pretty underwhelming."
"I've been looking for good pie ever since, but apparently there's none to be had for three hundred miles."
"Let me see what I can find," the waitress said, patting him consolingly on the shoulder.
Another waitress brought Sam his coffee and their check, which Dean paid reluctantly.
"No pie," he grumbled.
"Maybe at the next place," Sam said, attempting cheerfulness.
Dean tossed a few dollars on the table as a tip and they headed out to the car only to have their original waitress run out, flagging them down.
"Wait! Wait!" she called out, waving one hand while the other held a small box.
Dean and Sam looked at each other, but halted, doors on the Impala already open.
"What's this?" Dean asked as the woman handed him the box.
"I had the most god awful birthday this year," she explained. "Only thing good happened in the last year was my divorce papers finally coming through, so I figured the good lord would want me to make someone else's birthday a little better if I could." She gestured to the box. "I sent my daughter home with two pieces earlier tonight - one for each of us. She ate her piece, but that one's mine. It's damn good pie, but I can get another slice tomorrow. You should have this one tonight."
"You went home for this?" Dean blinked in surprise.
"Oh, I don't live but a few miles out," she said dismissively.
Dean lifted the lid and looked inside. The piece wasn't just in perfect shape it was huge - the kind of piece an employee might cut for themselves when the boss wasn't looking.
"Thank you," Dean said honestly. "You made my birthday and I've had a pretty crap year myself." Impulsively he gave her a kiss on the cheek and she blushed girlishly.
"I have to go close up now," she said, backing away. "But you enjoy your pie now!"
"I sure will. And happy belated birthday!" Dean nodded, smiling. "May you have a better year before the next one rolls around."
"You too, hon! Happy birthday!"
She went inside after a final little wave and Dean and Sam got in the car. Dean put the pie box on the bench seat between them and glared at his brother.
"Don't touch my pie!"
"Trust me," Sam said, smirking. "The cardinal rule of Dean: never get between a man and his pie."
Dean pulled the Impala out on to the road and headed for their motel.
"Especially birthday pie!"
