Truth be told, the setting was probably one of my favourite elements of the book, although there were also interesting characters, dolphins and smugglers. A fun read that was let down at the end by ( Read more... )

I really enjoyed that BBC movie. I still haven't got to reading the book. So many Durrells to read...

I got stuck on Lawrence Durrell's fiction when I tried it as a teen, but really liked his voice in Bitter lemons so will try more of his non-fiction.

You should try My family and other animals, I bet you'd love it!

PS: Is this Kathleen? If so, I think I read about the movie on your blog!

That's interesting -- I couldn't get interested in the TV version, but I love those books.

I wasn't sure at first but the end of the movie was enjoying it. I'm glad you love the books, though! A sign of excellent taste :)

It's a great book, funny and interesting! I first read it as an impressionable teenager and fell in love with all of (Gerald) Durrell's books so am not very unbiased but I think Peggy recently read it for the first time and enjoyed it too. It should go up the pile :)

Durrells, Corfu, This Rough Magic (I agree exactly with your summary)...have you come across "Songs of Blue and Gold" by Deborah Lawrenson?

It's a new novel set mainly on Corfu and loosely based on the life and loves of Lawrence Durrell. Really intriguing, multi-layered and the writing makes you feel you are there.
