This, exactly (and in particular the bit that you've emphasised). I still remember getting in a long debate with a male 'friend' who found an old meme about standing up against rape/abuse 'offensive' because 'not all men are like that'. And then proceeded to use the old tone argument on me (because men are incapable of telling that these things are wrong unless we explain it to them politely and calmly? I don't know).
