Do you want to say something like "lesbians ______ the public eye?" (stayed out of, shunned, etc.) Or possibly, "lesbians were careful to avoid public recognition." Is it the lesbians keeping secret or the public ignoring them or a combination of both? That will change how you re-word that phrase.

not specifically. it's more that i need someone to read through and make sure i'm not being too casual in my phrasing/with my word choice. my writing style is quite informal.
