Unfortunately, I can't see your images, but I think I get what you're saying anyhow. I don't think you're ruining your story by rewriting it but you are creating a different book than the Restraint I read a while back. That's not bad unless it feels bad to the Creator (you).
All these book writers are telling you what worked for them but that doesn't mean that what works for you isn't just as valid.
I can't see your pictures, either, but I like the way you're putting this together. Of course, the bit that's missing from this metaphor is: who will wear the clothes? Are you designing a one-off bespoke piece of couture, or an off-the-rack machine-sewn garment? Are you sewing a one-size-fits-all, or are you designing something that will look good in any size, for any shape? Are you designing something that will only suit curve-less androgynes on the catwalk, or something you could expect real people to wear? Are you designing something functional, to be worn, or are you designing art, to be admired?
Not that you can't design something that's both. There is, of course, a place for all of these garments in fashion, just as there is a place for all of these works in literature.
Not, of course, that I'm intending to complicate your metaphor.
