I find that the key to entering into any new culture is longevity. At first, you'll be on the outside looking in, but after the Bike People see you a few times, you'll get the occasional nod of acknowledgment, and as you get up to speed with the Ongoing Sagas, and can say "Hi, Mike--what did the vet find when you took in your cat last week?" or "Have you heard from Jill? Does she like her new job?" then you will move from the periphery to the center.
Mind you, sometimes it's interesting at the center and sometimes it isn't.

I'm pleased to report that I've got my lycra-wearing, competitively athletic sister participating in Cycle Chic--she rode to the symphony last night in high heels and a cashmere overcoat and felt very empowered.
