also, i was thinking about you the other day and wondering when you were going to post some other tidbit about ships...and then here it is! it's like you're a mind-reader!
Hee! I got it, and thank you! These posts get almost no comments, but the few that do come in indicate that I have a handful of fellow LJ-ers who appreciate fine geekery.
I was as surprised as anyone when that cruise ship was attacked off the coast of Africa last year by pirates. It's just so... weird... that that kind of thing still happens.
Yeah, I was surprised at the sheer volume of piracy reports--and that so many of the incidents, like the on aboard the Arethusa, involved knives and cudgels and stuff, but no guns. Boarding a ship and tying up the crew in order to get, what? A stereo and some canned goods? Maybe some radio gear? I mean, that's desperation, man.
The North China Sea is by far the most piratical of all the seas, according to the IMO. I'm rethinking my dream of "tramp steamer" type travel.
Did I ever tell you that my younger brother has spent about 15 years going to sea on merchant ships? Piracy is something that makes my blood rum cold. Fortunately, he changed to a Sydney based job (Sydney Ferries) about six months ago - but he still talks of going back to sea. Fires at sea are another scary thing - he's had a fire in an engine room once. But fortunately no pirates. They don't always take the time to politely tie you up.

I must say, though, that in a discussion of pirates, the typo "something that makes my blood rum cold" is kind of delightful. Arrrrr.
