There is a man in my Holocaust class. He is old(er) and his face is all creased with smoker's wrinkles. He has long, gray, curly, matted hair that he wears in a ponytail under a dirty trucker hat. His nails are very long and yellow. Worst of all, he smells terribly of body odor.

It's really gross, and I don't know what to do about it.

I know this is an old entry but I just ran across it. It makes me think he may have an untreated mental illness. Often these folks dissassociate from themselves particularly in hygeine issues and although we recognize the fact that they are dirty, smelly and often unkempt; in general they do not.
He probably needs professional help. Did you ever talk with the instructor? There may be some mechanism by which the instructor has some way to refer to the health service. All that said don't be surprised if the man refused help even when offered. Sometimes the dislusional system is so rigid that they lack that kind of trust with people until they get to know them well.
