Just a quick note on Terminator: Salvation

Aug 11, 2009 14:34

Have finally got around to watching this (been meaning to forever) and I'm quite enjoying it, but is it just me, or is this a good movie rendered average by a mediocre director? Seriously, I've been watching and I can't fault the actors in terms of what they're doing with what they've been given, the cinematographer's excellent, the music's decent ( Read more... )

I agree with you completely about the whole mediocre director thing. I loved all the actors in that movie and thought they did a wonderful job. Cinematography was great, editing great, effects, etc.

I've recced this before on my journal but maybe you missed it:

No Fate by hollycomb. She's got another epic Kyle/Marcus fic too with John in it - I'd check the tags, or just look back on her entries. Basically, read all the Kyle/Marcus she's written (if you haven't already) because EPIC. And you can check out kylemarcus too, good stuff there :)

\o/ thank you my lovely, I shall be off to scour her writing (and I might maybe have found kylemarcus in 0.2 seconds of going online but I figured I'd try and pinch my LJ mates' recs first to save me searching for the good stuff ^_-).

Dear James Cameron (or, well, anyone else with actual talent), please direct the sequel! GOOD GROUNDWORK HAS BEEN LAID. PLEASE BUILD ON IT.

(And I missed pretty much all recs up until now, as generally a fandom does not exist for me until I've seen the canon for it. There are, of course, exceptions, like the Twilight fandom, where it's far more fun observing the fandom without suffering the source material - well, movie aside, because thank you Carlisle Cullen UNF UNF UNF)

I liked the movie well enough, but the trailer gave away the entire plot =/

Also, Kyle Reese = UNF UNF UNF UNF

Every time I look at Anton Yelchin I feel like a child molestor :(, I disapprove!

Still want so much slash of Kyle and Marcus though.

YES. TRAILERS OF MOVIES IN GENERAL: DON'T GIVE AWAY THE PLOT IN ONE SITTING UNLESS IT'S A GODAWFUL MOVIE AND YOU'RE DOING US A FAVOUR :( :( :(!

MICHAEL BAY! *BOOM EXPLOSIONS BOOM BOOM MORE EXPLOSIONS*

Also I hear there was mention of robot testicles.

I haven't seen either of the Transformers movies because I'd like my childhood memories to remain intact :|

XD

Terminator: Salvation and Transformers 2 were both entertaining, although Transformers 2 was definitely a Matrix Reloaded for "OH GOD THIS BIT IS SO AWESOME wait what the hell was that oh god just kill me now cut those ten minutes out of my brain OH GOD, AWESOME, AWESOME AGAIN oh sweet jesus no just really please I want to die OH, OH YES PLEASE MORE". Terminator: Salvation was much more consistent.

I daren't dream what Michael Bay would do with a Terminator movie if he were handed the reigns XD. EXPLODING ROBOTS, EVERYWHERRRRRRE.

(And yes, there was mention of robot testicles in Transformers 2).

I would recommend the first Transformers movie, purely based on the fact a few of my mates who loved the cartoons loved that movie, but the second movie didn't go down too well with anyone.

I just admired the pretty. And the totally random Megatron/Starscream BDSM.

I will forever love the fact that in Cutthroat Island, water explodes.

Seriously. WATER. EXPLODES.

And it's okay <3, my brain sometimes farts which is why I was happy to fill in the conversational gaps anyway :D.

Sam Worthington did an amazing job in T:S! I think he and Yelchin were its saving graces--I was less than impressed with Bale in this one. :( Of course I'm told that he was VERY displeased about something (like contract shenanigans) so it affected his performance.

But I agree with you on your assessment of the director. The movie could have been so, so much better. And the storyline moved along too quickly; a lot of action, not a whole lot character development besides Marcus.

(And I second reccing hollycomb's fic.)

I thought Bale did okay, but I think he was playing the part a lot, lot meaner and angrier than it was meant to come across. I mean, there was no doubting at the end of the story that you were on Marcus' side more than John's.

And Yelchin, as usual, was almost painfully innocent-looking while being exceptionally awesome. I wonder if he's going to stick to supporting roles though or if he'll pull a Shia LeBoeuf (i.e. being in bit part roles in all this summer's major franchises, and then being the lead in everything next summer)?

I get the sneaking suspicion from the way things were put together that there was more to the story that the editor had to cut out to give it some sort of pace; McG shoots weirdly dull action scenes and given the direction overall I do feel the editor was doing their best to make a meal out of scraps and they did very, very well (in my opinion ( ... )

I think it's a film where if you'd been going in thinking "OH YEAAAAAAH THIS IS GOING TO BE EPIC" you would have been totally bummed, but when you go in after the backlash, it becomes a lot easier to appreciate for what it did manage. Like Cloverfield! If I'd gone in while the hype was high I'd've left raging (or, well, a bit miffed), but because I watched it after everyone had gone "IT'S NOT THAT GOOD YOU GUYS" I was prepared ( ... )
