I think she wrote it the way she did in order to be able to wrap everything up in the next book. I also believe that Big D knew about the Unbreakable Vow so he asked Snape to kill him rather than ruin Draco's life.

But I adored it. Possibly too much - adoring a book as much as I do is probably not healthy.

Oh Em...you are the first person I have encountered that didn't enjoy the book. And I can't even really yell at you about that cause you've made very valid points!

I think JK just wanted us to see a different side of the drama, hence the darkness and focus on the danger. I can't add too much cause I'm not much of an analyzer and most of my friends adored the book and analyzed it so much that it sort of ruins the fact that in the end it is for entertainment purposes!
