Part 1
Past - Junsu; 8 years old
Junsu was a kind boy. Bright and happy, there was always a smile on his face. Adults always cooed about how adorable and handsome he was, spoiling him with their attention, and Junsu thrived under it. He wasn’t the kind to start fights, to not listen, or to call someone names. Some of the children disliked it, calling him a goody-two shoes, a suck-up, mama’s boy and other things that kids that age found hurtful. Junsu took it all in stride though, never striking back at them. He never really had a reason to, at least not in his opinion.
Even years later, Junsu could still remember the day that things changed for him with perfect clarity.
The day had seemed to drag on forever for poor Junsu. He slowly made his way home, ignoring the way his clothes stuck to his slight frame. He pouted lightly as he made his way past the park, thinking of ways to try to get his momma to make him his favorite snack when he got back from school. He was wondering if maybe he should go with the pout and whine routine this time when he heard someone crying.
Junsu frowned, looking around suspiciously. The sound seemed to be coming from the other side of the trees, inside the park. Junsu moved a bit closer, trying to look through them to see the source of the noise, but the tree foliage was too thick. Junsu pouted harder, glancing back down the street, wondering if maybe he should just leave it alone.
He was turning to start heading back home, mind made up, when the cry sounded again, louder and pained. Junsu’s eyes widened and he bit his lip, looking back through the trees. He bit his lip harder, wondering if maybe he should try to find an adult. His momma had always told him if he needed help to find one, and it sounded like someone needed help.
But there were no adults around, it was just little Junsu.
Junsu puffed out his cheeks, his eight year old brain trying to work over his options when another cry went up and Junsu made up his mind, face showing his determination. He pushed his way through the trees, dropping his bag just outside them until he was standing in the park. The source of the noise was directly in front of him now.
Whenever he described what came next many years later, Junsu would always say how he was the knight in shining armor for the damsel in distress, valiantly swooping in to save the day. Then Changmin would call him an idiot before telling whoever was listening what really happened, ignoring Junsu’s indignant dolphin-shrill protests in the background.
There, in front of Junsu, was a group of 3 kids, none of them much older than Junsu himself. They were huddled around something in front of them, jeering in a way that made Junsu frown and get a bad feeling. It didn’t sound like very nice laughter.
Then the kids shifted a bit, revealing what they had been hiding, and Junsu’s eyes widened as he saw the small huddled boy curled in a ball in front of the three obviously bigger, older and stronger boys. There were tear tracks on the boys flushed cheeks, and his hands were fisted next to his head, protecting it as he clenched his eyes shut. He was making pained whimpers and then one of the boys struck out with his leg, catching the boy in the side, and the small boy cried out, the same pained cry that had dragged Junsu through the trees.
Junsu was gentle, yes. He was kind and forgiving, making friends with everyone. But he hated to see other’s hurt or bullied and this was exactly that.
Junsu saw red.
He cried out angrily and the boys startled, turning around and looking at Junsu with wide eyes. Junsu didn’t give them time to realize what was happening, immediately rushing them, arms and legs reaching out and making contact with anything in reach. The three boys got over their shock quickly enough and immediately started hitting back.
It was over in minutes, and by the end of it Junsu and the boy were both laying on the ground, bruises and cuts covering their bodies. The three boys were walking away, laughing, hardly any marks on them with the exception of a few light bruises here or there from a few luckily landed strikes on Junsu’s part.
The smaller boy was looking at Junsu with wide eyes while Junsu bit his lip, trying to keep the tears back. He had managed to get the boys to leave the smaller one alone, and that was all that mattered. Though Junsu’s tiny child-hood ego was bruised he would bounce back quickly enough. Junsu turned to look at the small boy and smiled brightly at him, ignoring the pain from his split lip at the attempt.
“I scared them off! Are you okay now?”
Junsu’s expression was earnest and eager and the younger boy stared at him with what passed for incredulity for a child. The child uncurled himself a bit, staring at Junsu and blinking. When he spoke his voice was full of shock.
“W-why did you do that?”
Junsu just laughed lightly, shrugging and rubbing the back of his head.
“I couldn’t just let them hurt you!”
The boy blinked again and something flashed in his eyes. He grinned a little at Junsu.
“You’re kind of stupid but its okay, I like you.”
Junsu couldn’t decide if he was being made fun of or not, but then the boy smiled brightly at Junsu, holding out a hand, and Junsu decided he didn’t care.
“I’m Changmin.”
Junsu grinned right back, grasping Changmin’s small hand in his own.
“Junsu.”
*~*~*
Three years had slipped by- Changmin and Junsu had gradually become like two parts of the same soul. They did everything together and had no need to give attention to anyone else.
It was a windy afternoon in October, a few days before Halloween- Junsu had convinced his dad that they were old enough to go trick or treating by themselves, but the only way that they could go out at all after dark was if Yoochun came with them- which they were fine with. Uncle Yoochun was always fun.
This year, they decided to surprise each other and pick costumes on their own, their mother’s hiding smiles as they tried to be as secretive as possible.
Junsu was in the living room by himself after getting home from school- sadly, without Changmin. His mother had wanted him to come home, and so they had parted at the park.
His hand grasped the controller tighter and his focus was on the television, the eleven year olds’ fingers pushing brightly colored buttons and thumb maneuvering the joy stick. The front door opened suddenly, startling him and causing his hand to slip, concentration lost. His character died and he glared at the screen before turning the video game console off. He got up from the couch and went to the kitchen, where his dad was setting down things he brought home from his trip.
Something caught his eye, hanging out from the older man’s pocket. He made to grab it, but his father turned and gently caught his hand.
“You can’t touch it Junsu- it’s not a toy.”
The eleven year old puffed his cheeks, enraged that his father was still treating him like a kid. “I know that! I won’t break it-!” But his father shook his head and pulled the object out, letting him see.
“It’s very fragile, Su. That’s why I’m going to hide it and not tell you were it is.” The chain was gold and the amulet was a deep emerald, inviting and warm.
Junsu wanted it- but he couldn’t have it. He stared for a moment longer before his father put it back into his pocket, away from his gaze.
He frowned and pouted, but he knew that the man had said that just to tease him. He looked at the other useless items on the table and deemed them boring, shooting his dad a weak glare before returning to the living room.
He forgot about it after dinner.
Halloween finally rolled around, and since it was Saturday, the kids were free to prepare and plan for night time. Changmin had come over earlier, costume hidden in his overnight bag. They played soccer in the afternoon, and by the time the sun was hitting the horizon, their excitement could not be tamed any longer. The younger boy stayed downstairs to change while Junsu ran up the stairs to his own room.
He rushed to put on his costume, face flushing as he noticed the tag on the pants tickling his bellybutton. After fixing that, he stood and looked in the mirror for a good five minutes, making sure nothing else was amiss and everything was perfect, wanting to impress Changmin so that he wouldn’t make fun of him.
After putting on the boots, he adjusted the hat atop his head, straightening it. He rushed from his room, but stopped when he heard muffled voices from his father’s study.
Ease dropping was wrong, but Junsu was excited for tonight and what if his father was talking candy routes with Uncle Yoochun?
He pressed his ear to door, trying to make out words.
“So, the amulet was at her place? Why would she have it?” He heard Yoochun say, making Junsu confused. Who was ‘she’?
“I have no idea. But what’s important is that I got it away from her. Who knows what a vampire could do with that much power? It’s safe here, and I plan to keep it that way for as long as I live.” Junsu tried not to gasp. Vampire? Were vampires real? What-
Junsu lost his balance as the door opened, falling into the room. Yoochun stared down at him, amusement marking his features. “Well, well- what do we have here? A lost little pirate that likes to listen in to his father’s conversations- for that, the tickling penalty!” He shouted and bent down; fingers running up and across the younger boy’s sides, making him flail and roll about, laughter escaping his mouth that made it hard to breathe.
Yoochun stopped after he asked for mercy and helped pick him up from the floor. “Now I think it’s time to go get some candy!”
Junsu squealed in delight and ran from the room, the older man chasing after him as they made their way down the stairs.
Changmin heard the commotion and looked up, calling out before he saw them. “It’s about time! If you don’t hurry, all the candy is going to be gone!”
“Yah! Why are you a ninja?!” Junsu yelled out, running over to his best friend and pointing to his costume- The younger boy was dressed all in black, fake sword tied around his waist along with a weapons pouch. His feet were bare, but Junsu could see the sandals sitting beside the coffee table. He had fingerless gloves on and a mask sat on the arm rest.
“Why are you a pirate?” Changmin countered, making Junsu falter a bit. He had on a ruffled white shirt under a black vest, sleeves a little puffy and too big. Dark red fitted pants wrapped around his legs, and a belt with a skull buckle held in place the authentic-looking pirate sword at his hip. The eye patch was in his pocket, and the big hat was in matching colors, folded and complete with feather sticking from the side. His boots were black and went up to his calf.
“B-Because pirates are better than ninjas, duh!”
They bickered back and forth before Yoochun stepped in, grabbing Junsu and helping him up onto his back for a piggyback ride. “I think pirates are better.” He said simply, and held the younger boy’s legs tight as he cheered so he wouldn’t fall.
He winked at Changmin, and they made their way out the door.
*~*~*
When Junsu lost his parents, it had been a very harsh ordeal to get through.
The sixteen year old had been called out of English class, which he was happy about until he learned why. He had been driven to the hospital and asked to identify the bodies. Afterward, when they tried to roll away the corpses, something in him snapped and he lashed out, shouting at the nurses that this couldn’t be possible. It just couldn’t. He wailed loudly and dropped to the floor, sobs escaping his trembling form.
Changmin had found him like that when he and Yoochun had gone to pick him up. He hugged the smaller boy, one hand smoothing down his hair, the other running up and down his back, pausing a few times to pat his shoulder.
Their lives changed drastically after that moment. And there was no going back.
Present
Junsu was startled awake as a hand pounded on the window of the car. He took a few moments to get his bearings, glaring at the tall man standing next to the door. The twenty-four year old rolled down the window a bit.
“What do you want Min? I was working.”
Changmin let out a snort, rolling his eyes. “Yeah sure you were. Anyway, you know that Yoochun-hyung went out on a hunt a few days ago right? He has yet to call for two days. Maybe we should-“
“You know how he hates when we go check on him. He probably lost track of time-“
The twenty-two year old frowned deeply and Junsu sighed, opening the door and stepping out, stretching his back.
“Go back the bags.”
