God, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that :\ I'm proud of your mom for mentioning Sally Ride and such though - that's something, though it may help only a little.
It's not even the bad porn that bothers me about 50 Shades of Grey. Given all the purple prose out there, that's nothing new. It's the abusive aspect, the way it promotes unsafe BDSM play - that's what gets me. I wonder how many people out there are giving kink play a try and getting into dangerous/harmful situations without realizing, or only realizing after its all gone terribly wrong.
I'm proud of my mom too...sometimes she can be really surprising and awesome.
UGH YES on the 50 Shades front. The amount of fail in that book could fill a whole other book. And it's so hard to make people understand that without them side-eyeing you that you happen to know so much about erotica/bdsm.
I think that fear of people judging you because you know so much about erotica/BDSM is why people aren't speaking up more about it more. We see it a lot online, but nobody who doesn't hang out in the online community seems aware of the fail. And that's sad, and worrisome. I've told my mom it's a crappily written book, but I haven't told her the particulars.
The obvious solution is to steal a car and come to Minnesota. ;) You can catch the final performance of "Sound of Music!" ;)
Seriously, though... it sucks that your extended family is so backwards. Ugh. Sometimes I'm grateful that I'm so removed from mine, because while some of them are awesome and it's sad not to see them more often, it's also nice to just not have to deal with them.
What especially sucks is when my parents say, "yeah, it's awful what (insert name) said, but they're family." As if sharing some chromosomal similarities gives you some sort of free pass for being a terrible human being. No, I'm sorry, I don't have to "love" them, and I don't.
