Customized LJ layouts?

Who knows how to do LJ layouts? I want to completely revamp mine and haven't the foggiest clue how to do it. The only thing I have decided is that I want the following banner on top. Help?

Edit: Okay, I followed a little thing from awakencordy but it's still not how I want it. Still wondering why my other components aren't showing up...anyone?

Don't worry, now that we got the basic down, we'll just have to experiment and find out :)

well basically it all boils down to this, can I add my extra components under the traditional links and calendar components? Or is it either or? And the second issue is whether there is a way to make it put my icons with each entry instead of no icons. I'm way too knew at all this.
