Down and dirty

There's a lot going on right now, and I keep meaning to post updates about some of it. Let's see what I can remember...

I suppose that the first thing that comes to mind is that last night I started a free online course in Esperanto. It's really neat... Ten lessons, each with exercises at the end that you send to a personal tutor. The language ( Read more... )

It would be awesome if you could contribute to reducing the heat island effect. Besides reducing the temperatures, it might allow more rain to fall here, especially during the day (my understanding is that the heat island effect helps push clouds to the edge of the valley during the day and helps contribute to the fact that most of our storms happen late in the day, but I'm no meteorologist). Does cement produce less of an effect than, say, tar style pavement?

Be careful with the Goodwill furniture, I've heard about people who've received bed bugs and termites thanks to such used furniture. Be sure to check the undersides of anything you plan to get for signs of critters. My mom bought a cabinet last year from a place that sells used furniture (not Goodwill, I think) and they noticed growing piles of sawdust at its base within a few days. After spraying judicious amounts of bugicide on it, they traded it back in or somehow got it replaced.

Depending on the timing, I'm up for helping out if you need an extra pair of hands and/or a surprisingly capacious little sedan to shift things.

We'd appreciate all the help we can get. We officially get the keys on April 6, and we'll be moving from the 6-8, we think.

I'd be having the 7th and 8th free-ish, then, and after work on the 6th. This means I should prepare by getting marshmallow fluff and condensed milk. ;)
