Billy slowly walked around the gaily-decorated apartment that Don shared with Kim. His eyes met with the other Christmas guests who were in attendance and he gave them a smile and nod.
Billy noted to himself that the majority of the guests were either FBI agents or medical staff that Don and Kim had become friendly with over the last three years.
Billy sauntered over to the punch bowl filled with spiked eggnog. He poured himself a glass and took a hearty sip. He licked his lips in appreciation that Don Eppes had many skills and one of them was a how to make a damn fine eggnog.
“Good. huh?”
Billy turned and met the gaze of a petite blonde. “Yes, Ma’am, it’s the best you’ll ever have. Here - let me pour you some.”
“Ma’am? Handsome and a gentleman aren’t you?” she said, her lips parting, allowing the tip of her tongue to slide out over her full red lips.
“Yes, my mom taught me right,” he answered, handing her the punch glass and watched her take a sip.
“Mmmm, that's good. By the way, my name is Ashley.”
“Billy Cooper,” he replied, squeezing her hand. Billy noticed that her nails were a bright celebratory red with silver sparkles for the holidays.
“Pleased to meet you.” She looked around the room. “Soooo, how do you know Don and Kim?”
“I’m Don’s partner from Fugitive Recovery. We’ve been friends for years now.”
“Ohhh, you’re the one that Don went on the ski trip with two weeks ago.”
“Yup that's me. And how do you know Don and Kim?’
“Uhh, I’m an ER nurse over at Presbyterian, Kim and I met over some of her cases and she joined my yoga class.” She smiled, “Kim said that you guys had a great time, that the powder was great.”
“It was. Don and I try to meet up at least once a year. I’m on the road most of the time and you get out of touch with friends and family. So we try to hit some trails once a year for a weekend trip, catch up and relax."
“I can imagine. So anyone special someone in you life?”
Billy smiled widely, showing the mask he had worn for the last three years. “No, Ma’am, that would be correct,” he replied as he caught a glimpse of Don walking by, a pain fluttering over his heart reminding him of what he could have had. "No one special in a long time.”
Ashley smiled and smoothed the sides of her dress over her supple thighs and toned body. “Well then, it's fortunate that you and I met tonight.”
Billy opened his mouth to answer when he heard Kim call out to the guests. “Hey, everyone listen up! We have an announcement.” Kim smiled giddily at her guests, buzzed by the glass of chardonnay in her hand. “Go ahead, Don,” she said as she nudged him.
Don smiled back at Kim. If you really knew Don as well as Billy had, you would see that Don wasn't as pleased as his face looked. “ Well, first, uh... Kim and I want to thank you all for coming out tonight. We both want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Also, thanks to every one who donated an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots. Steve and me are gonna drop them off on Monday.” He cleared his throat. “So, thanks again..." He paused and then was nudged by Kim to continue, "Uh, I’d also want to announce that, uh, Kim and I decided to get married.”
Billy watched the whole room erupt into loud whoops of congratulations to the couple. He felt ice form in his chest. He even smiled holding up his own glass when a few guests made a congradulatoary toasts. He looked on as some of the women went over to admire the ring that Kim had slid on her finger, oohing and ahhing over it.
Billy took a large gulp of the remaining eggnog then filled his glass back up, slipping the mask back on his face. He looked across the room and felt Don’s eyes looking back; they were trying to give Billy a message. But Billy didn’t fucking care any more and looked away, starting to pour another drink.
Billy felt a tug on his arm. Ashley smiled sultry up at him. “Hey, it’s getting sort of noisy here. You wanna get out of here?”
Billy stilled for a moment, his mind telling him, this was not a good idea but his body responded that it would feel fucking awesome to slide between those thighs.
“Best offer I've had all day.” He set his glass down and allowed Ashley to lead him outside to his truck. Opening the door for her, he then trotted to the other side, got in, and headed in the direction she gave for her apartment. Billy’s eyes flicked up to look in his rearview mirror, seeing Don dashing out of the apartment to where Billy’s truck had parked. He felt a pang of guilt and contemplated pulling the car over when Ashley distracted him by nibbling on his ear, her hands sliding over his thighs as she pressed against him.
Thirty minutes, and twelve unanswered calls from Don on Billy's silenced cell Billy had a very enthusiastic ER nurse in his lap swirling her hips around his cock. Her only audible words were ‘oh god, oh god’.
He rolled the two of them over, putting her flat on her back. He pulled out and sat back on his heels, telling her to flip over. She complied with a pleased look on her face as Billy put a pillow under her chest to prop her up. He gave her a playful slap on the ass before sliding back into her wet body. She moaned loudly over and over again as Billy let the noise of her orgasm blot out any thoughts of Don Eppes till his own orgasm spilled out of him.
Early in the morning, Billy made his goodbyes, saying he had to get an early start out. Ashley smiled back with a knowing smile that said she knew he was lying, but she still tucked her number in to his coat pocket. “Take care of yourself, Coop. You call me if you come back to town. No strings attached.”
“Yes Ma’am, I’ll remember that.” He gave her a big smile and then a kiss on the cheek. He made a mental note to have some flowers sent to her in a day or so, then headed to his truck.
He headed back to his motel room, packed up, and checked out. He got in the truck, then remembered he had to turn the ringer back on his phone. The phone rang at that precise moment and, without thinking, he answered. “Agent Cooper.”
“Coop, it’s Don.”
He cleared his throat, feeling his early euphoria evaporate away. "Yeah.”
Don replied sounding accusatory, “I wanted to talk to you last night but you left with Kim’s friend before I could.” Don paused on the other line, “I wanted to tell you first about Kim and me first but she surprised me with wanting to announce it.”
“Don, there's nothing to explain,” Billy snapped, “you don’t need MY approval.”
“Coop..”
Billy looked out at the open road, knowing that if he had just said yes to Don all those years ago to settle in one place, things would be one hundred and eighty degrees different.
Billy sneered, “Oh and if Kim asks, her friend Ash was the one who came on to me. I only obliged. That chick was one hell of a lay. I’ll send her some flowers when I get to my next assignment. Gotta go now, congrats to you and Kim, I have to call into the office. ”
Billy clicked his cell off before Don could reply. He didn’t want to hear anything else Don had to say.
It was about two years later when Billy set his eyes again on Don Eppes when he was brought in on the McDowd case. Don Eppes was a different man. He was closer to his brother and father, his mother had passed and he was no longer engaged to Kim Hall. But one look into Don’s eyes and Billy knew there would never be another chance for them either, he had hurt Don too much all those years ago. There would be no forgiveness for Billy Cooper, he had made his choice and, with regret, he accepted it.
