What's really amusing to me is that I had been thinking about this over the last few days, and your sidebar scenario is basically what kept playing through my mind...
As long as there are people who want to kill other people for no reason other than who they are, there will be "information extraction specialists" because there will be a need for them. Asking nicely over a cup of tea doesn't work.
Maybe getting them hooked on espresso and then threatening to deprive them of it? Nah, that'd count as torture... damn. ;)
