Kekkaishi, aka Inferiority Issues: the series

Mar 28, 2011 13:07

I should probably post about the conference I went to, or life in general, and I shall do these things eventually, but for a while now I have been wanting to do a bookelfe style post with picspam about Kekkaishi, SO I AM GOING TO DO THAT.

Kekkaishi has a pretty generic shonen setup. For centuries, two families of kekkaishi ("barrier masters"), the ( Read more... )

Man, I keep meaning to go back to Kekkaishi, but I can't remember where I left off and would likely be better off just starting over. It's long enough to discourage me from doing that in the near future, but I probably will go back eventually--the creativeness and Tokine's awesomeness are just too much to resist.

At this point I would probably recommend waiting until it's finished and marathoning it, so you can catch back up to the creativeness and Tokine being awesome without suffering from the TERRIBLE WAIT between weeks. (Also, honestly, the final arc is very good but it has had more pacing issues than previous ones, I suspect it will be better read in one go.)

Huh, I gave the first volume a shot a while back and didn't like it enough to stick with it. I liked the use of barriers, but didn't find the characters all that engaging. It seems I'll have to give it another try!

Honestly it can be argued that the series doesn't really get going until around volume six, when Gen shows up and the Kokoburou arc starts to heat up. A lot of the early arcs are basically worldbuilding, so they don't have quite the character development or impact. I should emphasize, though, that pretty much every one of those worldbuilding arcs ends up being seriously relevant later on. There are one-off arcs in the series, but Tanabe's not an author who forgets events or characters ( ... )

On the one hand, I have been reading/watching so much shojo recently that I keep thinking I should also give myself an equally thorough grounding in shonen, and this seems like a good way to do it!

On the other hand, 340 chapters @________________@

And Becca, I did not even tell you about how Tokine's tiny grandmother is pretty much acknowledged by everybody to be the best kekkaishi around! Or about Yomi, a demon user who Masamori is basically using but who also sees through all his games, resulting in them having these kind of hostile but bizarrely honest interactions. And may I emphasize, Yoshimori kind of spends a decent amount of time following Tokine around going <3_<3.

But think of it this way, Becca, it's, uh, probably not going to be more than 35 volumes? :D?

Ahhh Orly stop using my kryptonites against me! FMA is still basically the longest thing I've ever read, I DON'T KNOW IF I'M READY FOR THIS PLUNGE.

But there is also an arc in which about half the page time is devoted to a little girl who creatively uses her power to outwit a kidnapper! YOU KNOW YOU WANT THIS.

Oooooooh.

You are a vile temptress, is what you are. (Where would one find this, if one wanted to marathon sometime in the summer when one had more time?)

If I am a vile temptress who gets people to read Kekkaishi, then I have no problem with being one! (And you may possibly be able to find it here.)

That icon is the best smugface I have seen in a while. I can only approve.

(:D Then perhaps some weeks down the line, I might wander over that way and see what marvels fall onto my computer screen!)

When Masamori is not taking on the big brother figure role or suffering from ISSUES, he has a tendency to be something of a magnificent bastard.

(I look forward to your thoughts, whenever you have a chance to do so!)
